Sheldrake Point Winery wins awards for their 2011 and 2010 Riesling Ice Wines

— Sheldrake Point Winery’s 2011 Riesling and 2010 Riesling Ice Wine were each recognized at the 2014 Rodeo Uncorked! International Wine Competition, sponsored by the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo™. This is the first time in the competition’s history that two unique wines from the same winery won in separate categories of the competition. The honor of “Top White Wine” was given to the 2011 Sheldrake Point Riesling; the 2010 Sheldrake Point Riesling Ice Wine was named “Top Sweet Wine.” Rodeo Uncorked! is among the largest wine competitions in the country. Sheldrake Point Winery’s two wines were selected from more than 2,500 entries, including wines from 40 Texas wineries and 16 different countries. Sheldrake Point’s were the first New York wines to take top honors.

                Competition champions were awarded buckles, chaps and saddles at the Rodeo Uncorked! Roundup and Best Bites Competition on Feb. 23, 2014. Additionally, Sheldrake Point Winery’s Riesling and Riesling Ice Wine was among the champion wines auctioned at the Rodeo Uncorked! Champion Wine Auction and Dinner on Sunday, March 2, 2014. Last year’s winning wines garnered more than $200,000 each in support of the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo’s mission to support numerous education initiatives in the greater Houston area.

                 Sheldrake Point Winery produces distinctive estate wines, crafted to take advantage of the flavor and character of the grapes grown on its 43-acre site overlooking Cayuga Lake. It is one of the leading producers in the Finger Lakes, a region of New York that is quickly gaining notoriety for its Rieslings.

                In a recent review of New York State Rieslings in Forbes magazine, writer Katie Kelly Bell included the 2011 Sheldrake Point Riesling as among three to try. The wine was also featured in Wine & Spirits Magazine, awarded a Gold medal last year at the 32nd Annual Riverside International Wine Competition, and earned a 2012 Medal of Excellence from the Jefferson Cup Invitational and a Silver medal in the 2012 New York Wine & Food Classic. The 2011 Riesling has soft and supple aromatics of ripe peach and sweet honey. Hints of lilac and candied pear on the palate couple with a round, silky mouth feel braced by bright acidity.

                The 2010 Riesling Ice Wine is a classic ice wine, with grapes that are frozen on the vine and hand-harvested while frozen, delivering an elegant structure and refined complexity. Featured in Wine Spectator where it was given a score of 92, James Molesworth described it as: "Lusciously sweet, but pure and racy, with vibrant pear, creamed apple, green fig, jasmine and quince notes all woven together and gliding through the lengthy finish.”

                Among its many U.S. accolades, the wine was given a score of 91 in Wine Enthusiast and named “Best Dessert Wine” and “Best Ice Wine” at the New York Wine & Food Classic (2012). It was recognized at the 2011 Canberra International Riesling Challenge as “Best Riesling in America” and with the award of “Top Gold.”
